The glamorous evening welcomed a distinguished crowd of elected officials, business owners, community leaders, South Suburban College (SSC) staff, administration, and generous supporters. Guests were treated to an elegant night of gaming, dining, live entertainment, silent auctions, and heartfelt celebrations, all in support of student success.

Entertainment was provided by the legendary Art Turk and the Congo Square Artistic Ensemble, a dynamic musical group led by Art Turk Burton. With over three decades of performance history, the ensemble brought a soulful, rhythmic backdrop to the evening, honoring the rich cultural traditions of Congo Square in New Orleans.

The program featured award presentations and remarks by SSC President Dr. Lynette Stokes, Chairman of the Board Terry R. Wells, Executive Director of PR & Resource Development Dr. Kellie Martin, Vice President of Administration & Finance Devon Powell, Vice President of Academic Services Tasha Williams, and Master of Ceremonies Jeff Beckham, Jr., CEO of Chicago Scholars and Co-CEO of REACH Pathways. Together, they highlighted the extraordinary achievements of the evening’s honorees and emphasized the lasting impact of donor support on SSC students’ educational journeys.

A standout moment of the evening was a $25,000 donation from Ingalls Memorial Hospital/UChicago Medicine to the Foundation’s Allied Health & Nursing Campaign, an investment that will significantly enhance healthcare education and training opportunities at the college.

Thanks to the overwhelming generosity of our guests, sponsors, and donors, this year’s Casino Royale Gala raised close to $90,000, reinforcing SSC Foundation’s mission to break down financial barriers and elevate student success.

The 7th Annual Southworks Robotics & Engineering Olympics returns on Saturday, April 12, 2025, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the South Suburban College Fieldhouse, main campus located at 15800 S. State St, South Holland, Illinois. This dynamic event is open to the public and free for all to attend, offering a morning of thrilling competition, hands-on STEM experiences, and family-friendly fun.

High school students from across the region will compete in five action-packed challenges—VEX Robotics, Mazerunner, Pathfinder, Sumo Survivor, and Catapult—designed to test creativity, teamwork, and real-world engineering skills. Community members, families, and friends are encouraged to come out and support these talented young innovators as they showcase months of hard work and dedication.

McCaskill, 5th District, Senator Napoleon B. Harris III, and Mayor Roger Agpawa of the City of Markham, invites the community to join in a day of recycling and family fun at the Recycle Day & District Office Grand Opening. This exciting event will take place on Saturday, March 29, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 3039B W. 159th St., Markham, IL.

“I’m reaching out for our community’s support of sustainability,” said Commissioner McCaskill. “Recycling goes beyond a simple choice; it’s a pledge to our planet and generations to come. By making small changes today, we can create a more equitable and sustainable future. We are in this together.”

Residents are encouraged to bring their recyclables and enjoy a day filled with activities for the whole family. Acceptable items for recycling include:

  • Clothing and Textiles (clean & dry)
  • Styrofoam (clean, free from food, tape, or labels)
  • Household recycling (paper, plastic bottles, containers, metal cans, glass bottles, and jars)
  • Electronics & small appliances

About Fred ‘Hammer’ Williamson

Fred Williamson, a former Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs football star, became one of the first Black male action stars of the 1970s, making a name for himself in the blaxploitation film genre. He gained early television recognition in Julia (1968) before transitioning into action-packed roles in films such as That Man Bolt (1973), Black Caesar (1973), and Mean Johnny Barrows (1975).

In 1974, Williamson established Po’ Boy Productions, which has produced over 40 films to date. His career has spanned decades, including work in Hollywood, international cinema, and independent productions. From his role as a vampire-hunting biker in From Dusk Till Dawn (1996) to his comedic turn as Captain Dobey in Starsky & Hutch (2004), Williamson has remained a dynamic force in the entertainment industry both in front of and behind the camera.

Voice Actors Needed for PAC Rats Theater Company of South Suburban College https://www.ssc.edu/voice-actors-needed-for-pac-rats-theater-company-of-south-suburban-college/ Tue, 18 Feb 2025 18:41:16 +0000 https://www.ssc.edu/?p=84556 South Holland, IL – The PAC Rats Theatre Company of South Suburban College (SSC) will hold open auditions for two mystery-themed radio plays on Wednesday, February 19, and Thursday, February 20, at 6:00 p.m. in the Kindig Performing Arts Center (PAC) at 15800 S. State Street, South Holland, IL.

Actors 18 and older are needed to voice multiple characters and create live sound effects.

The plays include Sam Shovel, Private Eye, a 1940s detective noir parody by Jim and Jane Jeffries, where a private eye must solve a murder involving a yardstick, and A Sherlock Holmes Radio Mystery, Jon Jory’s adaptation of Arthur Conan Doyle’s A Scandal in Bohemia.

Homewood resident Pat Nevins will direct, with Sandra Wagner of Lansing instructing participants on live sound effects. Actors may play multiple roles, and the ability to perform different voices or dialects is a plus but not required.

Evening rehearsals are planned, with performances on April 4, 5, and 11 at 7:30 p.m., and April 12 at 2:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

The PAC Rats also seek volunteers for live sound effects, set building, and backstage roles.

Auditions are open to the community and SSC students. No appointments or prepared materials are needed. Auditioners will read from provided scenes and should bring a list of scheduling conflicts.

State Street, South Holland, Illinois. This event is free and open to the public.

This community-focused event aims to promote firearm safety and mental wellness, offering a space for critical discussions on topics such as Mental Wellness and Crisis Intervention Options. Attendees will have the opportunity to receive free gun locks and learn more about safety resources and mental health support options.

SSC Criminal Justice Program Coordinator Becky Walters emphasizes the importance of collaborative safety initiatives. “Our goal is to provide valuable resources and information to enhance safety and well-being in our community,” said Walters. “Through this event, we hope to raise awareness and offer tools for responsible firearm storage and mental health crisis support.”
